Anna Harvey

Portfolio of experience, skills and knowledge.

I have led the faculty of Art and Design at Soham Village College since 2011.  Our policies ensure that the students’ experience of Art and Design is exciting, motivating, innovative and centred on progress.

I have designed and implemented new schemes of work which have improved student engagement, successfully increasing take-up at GCSE to approximately 80 in a year group and with a significant impact on student attainment. We have consistently positive residuals, achieving 100% A*-C last year.  A recent GCSE focus has been on artist research, with almost all students achieving at least a B grade for this objective.

A particular interest of mine is the use of assessment strategies in art and design to enable the students to improve independently. This is a tool used in almost every lesson and students demonstrate rapid progress as a result. I am also interested in continuing to develop strategies for assessing and demonstrating progress in a practical setting.

I have supported individual teachers to improve their planning for progress in preparation for Ofsted, delivered CPD based on assessment for learning and supported another school in the moderation and delivery of coursework.

After a career curating contemporary art and craft, I have been teaching art and design since 2000 where I have had various responsibilities including Head of Art and Design. I have also worked in primary schools doing a mix of art inset training combined with workshops.

Throughout this time I have continued to develop my own practice through exhibitions and commissions. My experience and development as an artist have allowed me to greatly enhance the techniques and skills developed within Schemes of Work. I am passionate about art education and would like to share these outstanding resources and skills with primary and secondary colleagues.

My areas of expertise include: cross-curricular art projects, which focus on raising the profile of Art in Schools; practical ways of teaching art and design which follow national curriculum guidelines, especially painting: ICT and printmaking and assessment for learning.  I also have considerable experience of teaching art at primary level.  Feedback from the art co ordinator for a recent CPD session on 'Observational Drawing and Primary Art Assessment' , "The practical activities that we took part in as staff were great fun and very engaging. They really helped to develop our understanding, stimulate important discussion and remind us of how it feels to be 'learners'. The assessment resources that were supplied and used were brilliant and it was good to level work together with very specific criteria. I am also a Culture and Arts Leader for Schools and Academies (CALSA).  Through this role I advise schools on how to apply for Artsmark and offer Artsaward.
